Transcriptions

Written By: Zachary Kai » Published: | Updated:

I turn audio and video into clean, accurate text: done by ear, not by machine. No garbled names, no guessed-at jargon, no silent gaps where the audio got tricky.

Types

  • Captions & Subtitles: timestamped SRT or VTT files for video, so your work is accessible to everyone.
  • Clean Verbatim: every word, minus the filler, false starts, and stumbles. The default, and best for most things.
  • Edited Transcript: lightly tidied into readable prose, with grammar smoothed and tangents trimmed. For publications, and show notes.
  • True Verbatim: everything exactly as spoken, including pauses, repetitions, and non-verbal sounds. For research, legal, and linguistic work.

What I Work With

I adore working with:

  • Interviews, oral histories, and personal archives
  • Podcasts, talks, panels, and workshop recordings
  • Voice memos and dictated drafts on their way to becoming a book

My Process

Every project begins with you and what'll serve you best. I provide:

  • Clear communication about scope, format, and timeline
  • A sample transcript (one page) before committing to larger projects
  • Speaker labels, timestamps, and a glossary of names and terms as needed
  • Anything unclear marked [inaudible 00:00] rather than quietly filled in
  • Delivery in your format of choice: .txt, .docx, .md, .srt, or .vtt
  • Confidentiality by default, and files deleted on request

Portfolio

I produce the transcripts for Wonders of Web Weaving.

Testimonials

"When I started planning Wonders of Web Weaving, I knew I wanted to offer hand-written transcripts so that a text version of the show would be available to anyone who wanted or needed it.

I reached out to Zachary to help produce the transcripts, who went on to produce high-quality transcripts for the show, adding time-stamps and even links to resources mentioned in the episodes. Zachary always delivered work on time, and in the format requested so that I could easily publish the results. I would definitely work with Zachary again."
